Melissa Bekker, who brings passion, expertise and a clear vision to the future of THE TAN LAB.

Melissa has over a decade of experience in the beauty industry. After successfully running her own beauty salon, she joined THE TAN LAB as National Consultant and Training Facilitator. Her deep knowledge of sunless tanning and genuine love for the industry made her the natural choice to take ownership of the brand.

With a strong customer-focused approach, Melissa is committed to maintaining the exceptional quality and high standards that THE TAN LAB is known for, while continuously growing and evolving the brand. She consistently goes above and beyond to support salons, professionals and clients alike.

Our Origins

THE TAN LAB was originally founded by Shannon Mathie, who has over 15 years of experience in the beauty industry. Her passion for sunless tanning was driven not only by aesthetics, but by health. A life-changing melanoma scare and subsequent surgery highlighted the dangers of sun exposure and reinforced her commitment to safer tanning alternatives.

While running her spa, Shannon experimented with numerous sunless tanning brands—many of them imported and costly. Despite years of experience, she found that locally produced products were limited and often failed to match the quality of international brands.

Recognising a gap in the market, Shannon set out to develop a premium, locally produced sunless tanning range that could rival imported products. After two years of extensive research and development, THE TAN LAB was born.

Although Shannon is no longer directly involved in the business, her vision, values and legacy remain at the heart of THE TAN LAB.

Guided by a “less is more” philosophy, THE TAN LAB focused on creating the most natural-looking tan possible—one that complements every skin tone without ever turning orange or looking unnatural.

Our innovative formulations use two active tanning ingredients, rather than DHA alone. This unique combination has been extensively tested and proven to deliver a longer-lasting, evenly fading tan with superior results unmatched by traditional DHA-only products.

Innovation excites us. In 2017, we expanded our retail range with the launch of three new products. More recently, we introduced our Athlete Competition Tan range, designed specifically for athletes and bodybuilders—setting new standards in the competition tanning market.
